About Appalachian Sustainable Development
Appalachian Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit organization working in 10 counties of the Appalachian section of Virginia and Tennessee, a region which suffers from double digit unemployment, out migration of young people and chronic environmental problems. Formed in 1995 following a year-long community strategic planning process, ASD focuses on developing healthy, diverse and ecologically sound economic opportunities through education and training, and the development of cooperative networks and marketing systems. ASD`s two main programs are in Sustainable Forestry and Wood Products and Sustainable Agriculture.

ASD has two main focus areas, Sustainable Forestry and Wood Products [SFWP], and Sustainable Agriculture by which we practice the mission of "diversifying and strengthening the region`s economy while conserving the environment". The agriculture department builds on the groundwork of its Appalachian Harvest organic produce market, which is helping to make farming profitable by connecting local farms with high value markets. A packing and grading produce facility has been established to handle the large volume of produce now being purchased from the local farmers and delivered to the mainstream grocery markets. Both programs offer many workshops and trainings throughout the year.

About the National Good Food Network
The Wallace Center at Winrock International serves the growing community of civic, business, and philanthropic organizations involved in building a new good food system in the United States. In particular, the Center is focused on advancing regional, collaborative efforts to move good food--healthy, green, fair, affordable food--beyond the direct-marketing realm into larger scale, wholesale channels.

The Wallace Center has established a National Good Food Network that will:
*Serve as a networking, communications, and information hub, providing practical knowledge,   learning models, and valuable connections for the broad range of groups, both for-profit and non-profit, involved in building a new good food system.

*Stimulate development of important, on-the-ground nodes of the National Good Food Network by investing in regional groups and collaborative efforts engaged in scaling up sales of good food beyond direct markets to more substantial wholesale channels.

Objectives:
*Connection - foster regional initiatives that will bring increased good food into conventional food  systems in a way that will ultimately improve good food access for all communities.

*Knowledge - to assemble and connect value chain models and best practices, value chain experts, and opportunities for regional funding in the marketplace with regional network participants.

*Community - to enable network participants to think beyond the commercial transaction of good food and to become participants in initiatives that will improve good food access to all communities.

Wallace Center at Winrock International and the NGFN Food Hub Collaboration

The Wallace Center supports entrepreneurs and communities as they build a new, 21st century food system that is healthier for people, the environment, and the economy. The Center builds and strengthens links in the emerging chain of businesses and civic efforts focused on making good food – healthy, green, fair, affordable food – an everyday reality in every community.

Winrock International is a nonprofit organization that works with people in the United States and around the world to empower the disadvantaged, increase economic opportunity, and sustain natural resources.

The NGFN Food Hub Collaboration is a partnership between Wallace Center at Winrock International, USDA, National Good Food Network, and others. The Collaboration is working to ensure the success of existing and emerging food hubs in the US by building capacity through connection, outreach, research, technical assistance and partnerships. By supporting this crucial player in the value chain we aim to accelerate the growth of regional food systems that make healthy and affordable food available to all communities while creating viable markets of scale for regionally focused producers.
